Spring Gigs

Hi everyone, and apologies for the lack of fresh news of late. We came off a very enjoyable and successful European tour back in March and have been busy working on completing the next album, which, with any luck, will see the light of day in the Autumn. We’ve got a few UK and European Festival dates lined up – some are on our calender now, and some are still to be confirmed. But for now we are warming up for the summer with some gigs in Edinburgh, Brighton and London at the end of April and start of May. We’ll be playing some of the new material that went down very well in Europe, so we hope to see some friendly faces in the audience.

European Winter Tour Announced

We are delighted to announce another trip to the European continent in February and March. We will be returning to see some old friends, and play some new places. It kicks off with a very spceial show in Glasgow as part of Celtic Connections, and then we take in France, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Czech Republic, Poland, Italy and Greece. For those places we won’t reach this time, we are always working to play in new cities, and we hope to see you soon. For full info please see the Dates page on this site. ‘Flight EP’ – Out Now

Out now, the new Hidden Orchestra release ‘Flight EP’ (click to preview the tracks and see the full press release on Soundcloud).

This digital-only release from Tru Thoughts features a new track, Flight, as well as some remixes from the Night Walks album by Floex, Lost Twin, and Maddslinky (and a bonus remix by The Colonel available on the iTunes version).

Flight features Fraser Fifield (sax/whistle) and Su-a Lee (cello) reprising their roles from the album, with the addition of harpist Mary Macmaster on clarsach, and on clarinet Tomáš Dvořák (aka Floex, who also created the stunning remix of “Dust” for this release).

In addition to the digital release, our friends at Denovali Records have produced another deluxe version of the release on vinyl, to complement the popular vinyl version of Night Walks. Consisting of new track Flight with Floex’s remix of Dust as the B-side, there is also a very limited edition version of the vinyl release, with an extra disc featuring “drums-only” and “no-drums” versions of Flight, exclusive to this pressing.

Autumn Tour Dates & Massive Show in London This Weekend

The dust has only just settled on a hectic season of summer festivals, but this week sees us resume life on the road with a trio of exciting shows in Leipzig, Nottingham and London. In particular the show in London for our friends Soundcrash at the opulent Koko venue is going to be a highlight of the year no doubt, as we are sharing the stage with electronic music legends Luke Vibert and Daedelus. Even better, Daedelus is bringing his new AV show to London for the first time – called Archimedes – it consists of banks of mirrors that reflect light in time with the beats – check it out here.

Please note we are on-stage at 9.30pm for this gig.

Our Summer of Festivals

Some great festivals and gigs coming up over the next few weeks, as detailed by the e-flyer on the left. You’ll also see from this that we’ve already had a busy summer, with some fantastic gigs around Europe and the UK, with highlights including Podova Festival in Slovakia, North Sea Jazz in Rotterdam, Festineuch in Switzerland and of course the mighty Glastonbury, where we had the honour of opening the West Holts Stage on Sunday with a debut outing of our full 10-piece line-up, featuring the cast from our “Night Walks” album.

Edinburgh Jazz Festival – extended 9-piece lineup

We will be repeating our appearance at Glastonbury this year with another 9-piece lineup performance, on 27th July in the Edinburgh Jazz Festival, at the Queen’s Hall – featuring guest musicians Fraser Fifield (sax/whistle), Su-a Lee (cello), Mary Macmaster (clarsach/electro-harp), Marcus Britton (French horn) and Phil Cardwell (trumpet).

Following on from last year’s gig with The Bays, we are pleased to present Red Snapper as the headline act – the iconic band have just finished their first full album in 10 years…

Outlook Festival Mixtape

Joe has put this mixtape together in a nod to our appearance at Outlook in Croatia in September – ‘Europe’s biggest Bass Music and Soundsystem Culture festival’. Unlike previous mixtapes, this one is focused on beats around 140bpm, including an eclectic selection of reworkings and mashups..

New Mixtape – ‘Night Walks on Vinyl’

To celebrate the release of the ‘Night Walks’ album on deluxe vinyl (thanks to Denovali Records), Joe of Hidden Orchestra has put together this studio mixtape. Like the preceding ‘Footsteps Mix’, this carefully-sculpted selection rewards close listening, and contains numerous exclusive tracks, lots of sound design and plenty of spoken word. Features other Scottish artists (Macmaster/Hay, Araya, Christ., Mungo’s Hi Fi, Architeq) alongside artists from around the world (Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Prefuse 73, Jean-Claude Vannier, DJ Shadow, Nick Drake, Xploding Plastix and many more). Also field recordings from Edinburgh to Istanbul, and speech excerpts include a number of plays that Joe recorded for the BBC.
